Remembering Peter Higgs: An Encounter with a Scientific Giant

In the beautifully bustling streets of Edinburgh, surrounded by the aroma of freshly brewed coffee and the chatter of university students, I had the privilege of a brief encounter with a man whose name would become synonymous with groundbreaking physics - Peter Higgs.

It was the year 2010 when serendipity led me to a chance meeting with this Nobel Laureate in a quaint coffee shop outside Edinburgh University. After Friday prayers, I came out of the Central Mosque in Edinburgh - which is very near to the Edinburgh University, I was accompanied by my friend Francis, a Muslim convert from Poland, we went for a cup of coffee and stumbled upon an ordinary-looking man sitting across the table. Francis, a student of physics, recognized him instantly and graciously introduced us. Little did I know at the time the profound impact this encounter would have on me.

After seeking his permission to sit with him to which he graciously accepted, we engaged in conversation on many topics. I immediately found myself captivated by Peter's intellect and humility. Despite my limited knowledge of his work, I was entranced by his passion for unraveling the mysteries of the universe. I shared my own enthusiasm for science to which he showed admiration and interest
I, then, dared to broach the topic of religion (typical of me those days), to which he responded with graciousness and openness.

In the span of about twenty minutes, Peter Higgs not only shared insights into his work, but also displayed a genuine interest in my perspectives on Islamic theology. His attentiveness and respect left a lasting impression on me.

As our conversation drew to a close, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reverence for the man whose work would revolutionize the field of physics. With a handshake and a nod of respect, I bid farewell to Peter Higgs, unaware of the profound impact he would have on the scientific community in the years to come.

Now, in the wake of his passing, I am filled with both sadness and gratitude. Sadness for the loss of a brilliant mind and a gentle soul, but gratitude for the opportunity to have crossed paths with such a remarkable individual. Peter Higgs will forever be remembered as a beacon of resilience and light in the scientific community, his legacy enduring as a testament to the power of curiosity and discovery.

As we bid farewell to one of the greatest minds of our time, let us take solace in the knowledge that Peter Higgs' contributions to science will continue to inspire generations to come. Though he may be gone, his spirit lives on in the countless discoveries that bear his name, forever etched in the annals of scientific history.

Farewell, Peter.
